I have several different topics, depending on what you are looking for in a school visit. I also speak to adults and can tailor my lectures/activities to your needs. Click here for photos and comments of previous visits.
The Joys of Writing - This is a basic lecture/activity for beginner writers. The basics are quickly covered, then I go into detail about one or more sections. The basics include: Characters, Plot, Voice, and Setting/Detail. With extra time, all can be covered along with some writing exercises for the students.
Where do Ideas Come From - By far my most popular, this is a fun, interactive lecture/activity on how people come up with ideas. The students will be encouraged to participate and by the end, we will have created an outline for a brand-new story.
The Process of Publishing - Interesting at all levels of writing, but usually for the advanced writer. I discuss self-publishing and/or traditional publishing. Both take hard work, but persistence is the key.
A Beginner's Guide to Critique Groups - This is for all ages that wish to create critique groups. Smaller groups can bring something to read and get critiques on the spot, while larger groups will be given samples. Both will be aided in learning how to give (and hopefully take) constructive criticism and offer helpful feedback to others in the group.
Book Discussion - This works best if you have already read the book as a class. Have the students write down questions to ask the author (me). School discounts are available on ten or more books. Teachers, click here for ideas on class discussion/questions.
